On September 20th, 1519, 5 ships departed from Sanlúcar de Barrameda towards the west with the magnificent objective of finding the passage to the South Seas. The initial vision of Don Fernando de Magallanes, the financial support of King Charles I and the kingdom of Spain, and the bravery of the 239 men who embarked towards the unknown, allowed an idea to come to fruition.

After more than two years of crossing, on December 21st, 1521, the ship Victoria, with Juan Sebastián Elcano in command, decided that it would not return to Seville through the South Seas….

This critical decision, to return to Spain through the east, changed the destiny of Elcano and the crew members. They had achieved an epic feat by finding a passage to connect the Atlantic Ocean with the South Sea, a route had been opened to reach the Spice Islands and much more importantly, they were going to circumnavigate the Earth for the first time.

This achievement practically demonstrated to the world that the Earth was round. It was known that this was the case, but until this moment everything had been theoretical formulations represented on navigation charts and some globe.

With that inspiration, Elcano Investment Management was born, when Mikel and Miguel, after more than 20 years of experience together at CBRE and the investment sector in Spain.
